Haak Winery wins more awards! At the Tenth Annual Jefferson Cup Invitational, our wines received the American Example of Greatness and Certificate of American Merit designations. The overseeing judge and creator of the competition was Doug Frost, one of only three people in the world to receive his master of wine on the first try.

Don't Miss Our Annual Pruning Day! Featuring Chef David's World Famous Oyster Fry Start your very own vineyard vines by coming out to our annual pruning day on January 30, beginning at 9 a.m. You'll learn proper pruning techniques from Fritz Westover, who handles viticulture/oenology extension for the Gulf Coast. At 11 a.m., Chef David's World Famous Fried Oysters will be served, and trust us, you don't want to miss these delectable treats! For those of you who are not oyster lovers, we will also be serving fried fish, hush puppies, cheese trays and key lime pie!
For everyone's listening pleasure, we will have the wonderful sounds of the Bon Ton Mickey and the Zydeco Hot Steppers from 11-3 pm Featuring a musical mix of low down, tail shaking party music, Mickey is one of the most sought after artists in Zydeco music today.

Lee Pierce Achieves Culinary Excellence
Congratulations to Lee Pierce, Sous Chef at Haak Vineyards & Winery. He completed his Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institue LeNôtre in Houston. Lee became a member of our culinary team in October of 2008 and we are very proud of his accomplishment. Way to go, Lee!

2009 has been a great year for Haak Vineyards & Winery. We've launched our new image, released some fabulous new wines, like the Red Crab, and we've hosted numerous exciting weddings and events at the winery. We hope the new year brings as much joy and savory flavors as the previous one and we hope to see you here in 2010!

David's Recipe of the Month: 
Deep Fried Chorizo Stuffed Dates

A traditional Spanish tapas bar menu item, this appetizer is sweet surprise. The sweetness of the dates combined with the rich chorizo, flavored with smoked paprika, and the bacon marry so well together. The Spanish chorizo can be found at larger grocery stores and of course in the Haak Winery deli section.

24 large Medjool Dates (found in the produce section of larger grocery stores)
1 link of dry cured Spanish Chorizo (do not use Mexican Chorizo)
12 strips of bacon (apple wood smoked is best)
 4 cups of breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
 2 eggs
 2 cups of AP flour

Cut a small portion of the stem end of the date and push out the pit. If you find this difficult, just make a slit in the side and remove it. Cut chorizo into pieces just large enough to stuff into the date. After stuffing the date, cut bacon strips into two pieces and wrap each date with the bacon. Use a tooth pick to hold the bacon in place. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to one hour. In the meantime, set up your breading operation. In three shallow dishes set up the following: flour, breadcrumbs and eggs whisked together with three cups of water. Heat about 3 to 4 inches of vegetable, canola or peanut oil in a deep pot (to prevent splattering) to 360 to 375 degrees. Take stuffed dates and roll in flour, shake off excess. Coat them with the egg mixture and then coat them in the bread crumbs. Carefully place them into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and delicious. Remove from oil and let drain on paper towels for a few minutes. Serve and enjoy.
