Haak Vineyards & Winery Has Record-Breaking 2011 Harvest
Santa Fe, Texas – August 3, 2011 – "Grape" Expectations with Two Broken Records
Haak Vineyards & Winery, the first and only working winery in Galveston County, held a record-breaking Blanc du Bois harvest on July 9, 2011.
On Saturday, July 9, the annual Haak Harvest Festival held at Haak Vineyards & Winery in Santa Fe, Texas, had a record-breaking 170 volunteers and guests who braved the heat to break the standing ―harvesting time‖ record for Haak's Blanc du Bois grape. In a little under two hours, Haak harvested 4,032 pounds (2.01 tons) of grapes and pressed 268 gallons of grape juice. By 10 a.m., there wasn't a grape to be found on any of the vines.

"We couldn't have done it without everyone's help, and we are so pleased with the results," said Nadia Hetzel, Haak winemaker.
Due to the dry heat this year, there were smaller and fewer grapes to harvest, but according to Hetzel, that's not always a bad thing. "Smaller berries mean you can achieve more concentrated flavors," she said.
More than 170 volunteers helped harvest Blanc du Bois grapes for Haak's Annual Harvest Festival on July 9. In record time — a little under two hours — all the grapes had been picked and were then pressed by the Haak staff.
Combining Haak grape juice with other Blanc du Bois juice from Texas regional wineries, Haak anticipates producing approximately 8,670 gallons this year. Volunteers can purchase the fruits of their labor beginning in October or November of this year. Click here to view the video that captures some of the harvest day excitement.
Visitors can currently tour Haak Vineyards to taste the 2011 vintage varietals, and the winery is open for summer concerts, tours and tastings.
